“It’s so tacky”: People are calling out the modern home design trends they secretly hate, and yikes

We recently wrote a post where people shared the modern home design trends that might become “outdated” very soon. In the comments, readers revealed more current trends that are likely to disappear fast (or that they hope will go away), and they didn’t hold back. Here’s what they had to say:

1.“Open-concept kitchen shelving. The first issue is that many designs decrease overall shelving space, making storage impractical. The only time I’ve seen these shelving designs look cute is when they have matching, simple kitchenware, which is impractical for most kitchens that actually get used and need more than just a four-piece set of dishes and a pot-and-pan set. Then, for people who cook on their stovetops often, grease gets on every surface in the kitchen. Anything exposed will get grease on it, including all of those items on the open shelves.”

“If you don’t use all of those items regularly, they will need to have the grease and dust constantly cleaned off them. Let’s call this design out for what it really is: Airbnb basics.”

—Anonymous, 35, Oregon

2.“Glass showers. Who wants to squeegee them every day? Rain-X is a poor fix. It doesn’t last and still needs a squeegee. They are cheap.”

3.“Microwaves above the stove. Reaching over boiling pots is dangerous.”

—Anonymous, 76, Utah

4.“Fricking kitchen islands of any size. They’re just in the way.”

5.“Bar stool chairs. They’re impossible to adjust while sitting in them.”

6.“Homes with all-gray everything are the worst. Gray is so depressing. Gray exteriors, gray bathrooms, gray walls, gray tile — it looks like a morgue. A dirty morgue. I understand if you don’t know how to pick colors; it seems challenging, but if you travel to places where people have fun with color, you can get ideas. Or just look at pictures. I got the idea for the exterior of my house from a story about the Caribbean.”

“Now, people walk by and smile; one person said it reminded him of his home in Martinique. It’s chartreuse with cream and orange trim.”

7.“Recessed and trimmed-out shower shelves. Why draw attention to your collection of shampoo bottles?”

8.“Two-toned cabinets — the uppers one color, the lowers another. Looks like you got tired of painting and stopped. I’ve rarely seen it work. Just ick. It looks dated to me already.”

—Anonymous, 63, Massachusetts

9.“The ‘Big White House.’ The giant cube that fills almost the entire lot and towers above neighboring houses. White or very light gray with black trim. Especially terrible in older neighborhoods with small lots when a small house gets torn down, and BAM, a monstrosity appears a few weeks later.”

—Anonymous, 66, Idaho

10.“Dull, gray-colored, fake wood floors. I grew up in the era of real hardwood floors that were beautiful and classic!”

11.“An open-concept main living area. It will work for us as we have no kids, but I miss having walls — there’s nowhere for my stuff, like art! No walls means no art. Bleh!”

—Anonymous

12.“Open pergola-type roofs at a front door entrance. It doesn’t keep you dry as you fumble for the house key.”

—Anonymous, 72, Rhode Island

13.“LED bathroom mirrors. See them in many new homes. It’s so tacky!!!”

—Anonymous, 54, Louisiana

14.“Refrigerators that blend in and look like the cabinets, or one big glass door that shows everything inside. Personally, I wouldn’t do the clear door because I’m not Martha Stewart, where all her lovely, brightly colored, fresh vegetables are lined up perfectly to show their best angle.”

“My fridge is full of glass jars, condiments, bottles of juice, milk cartons, open cans of dog food, and leftovers.”

—u/Badassblizzard

15.“Small bathtubs. I need something better than the tiny tubs in the last several apartments I lived in. I’m a guy who actually loves a bath every so often, but the one in my current place is so small I literally got stuck in it. Felt like a turtle who’d gotten rolled on his back, lol.”

And finally…

16.“Pull-down faucets on the kitchen sink. They seem like such a great idea at first, but over time, all that yanking on the sprayer makes the whole faucet start to come loose. Can we please just go back to having the sprayer be a separate piece?”
